E-Commerce Platform Pricing in 2026: Why Your Shopify Bill Is 5-7x the Listed Plan Price
Shopify Basic is $29/mo. A real Shopify store on $50K/year in sales costs $2,000-$2,500/yr — not $348. Here's what e-commerce platforms actually cost in 2026, with a free preview table of 12 tools.
Shopify Basic is $29 per month — billed annually. That's $348 per year.
A real Shopify Basic store doing $50,000 in annual sales doesn't pay $348. It pays $2,000-$2,500.
Here's the math: $348 subscription + $1,000 transaction fee (2% on $50K GMV if you don't use Shopify Payments) + $600-$1,200 in apps (reviews, upsell, email capture) = $1,948-$2,548 per year. The platform fee is 14-18% of your actual total cost.
That pattern repeats across every platform we tracked. The headline monthly price is the floor, not the ceiling. We compiled pricing for 47 e-commerce platforms in March 2026 — full platforms, open source, headless commerce, marketplace builders, digital products, subscription commerce, B2B commerce, and payment processors. Here's the preview, what's changed, and where each platform actually fits.

The Three Pricing Traps That Catch New Store Owners
Trap 1: The transaction fee stack.
Shopify's 2% non-native payment fee is charged on top of your payment processor fee — not instead of it. If you use Stripe on Shopify Basic, you pay Stripe 2.9%+$0.30 per transaction AND Shopify 2% on the same transaction. On a $100 order: $2.90+$0.30 to Stripe + $2.00 to Shopify = $5.20 in transaction costs, or 5.2% of revenue. That's before refunds, chargebacks, or currency conversion.
The fix: use Shopify Payments (their native processor) and the transaction fee drops to 0%. But Shopify Payments isn't available in every country, doesn't support all business types, and can hold funds during disputes. Not every store can use it.
Trap 2: The GMV auto-upgrade.
BigCommerce Standard ($29/mo) auto-upgrades to Plus ($79/mo) when your trailing 12-month sales hit $50,000. Not when you choose to upgrade — when your sales cross their threshold. A store that hits $52K in year two owes $79/mo starting immediately, mid-contract. Over 12 months that's $600/yr more than projected. Volusion has the same structure. BigCommerce does not prominently feature this on the pricing page — it's in the plan comparison fine print.
Trap 3: The "free platform" real cost.
WooCommerce is free. Medusa is free. Reaction Commerce is free. The platform license costs nothing. The real cost is everything else: managed WordPress hosting runs $7-$30/mo minimum for WooCommerce. WooCommerce Subscriptions costs $259/yr if you need recurring billing. A premium theme is $99-$200/yr. A payment gateway (Stripe or PayPal) takes 2.9%+$0.30. A working WooCommerce store for a small business runs $45-$200/mo in infrastructure and plugins before you sell anything.
Medusa is similar but more expensive: it requires developer setup ($10,000-$50,000+ for a custom build) and ongoing developer maintenance. Free to license, not free to operate.
What Changed in the Last 12 Months
Gumroad's effective fee rate is higher than most sellers realize.
Gumroad charges 10% + $0.50 per transaction for standard sales. On a $10 product, that's $1.50 in fees — 15%. But if a buyer discovers your product through Gumroad Discover (their marketplace), Gumroad takes 30% instead of 10%. Sellers who rely on Gumroad's organic discovery for a meaningful share of sales are paying an effective blended rate of 18-21% per transaction. Lemon Squeezy's 5% + $0.50 is structurally cheaper for digital product sellers at every price point above $5.
Shopify Plus hit a new revenue-share pricing tier.
For established Plus merchants: at $800,000/month in GMV ($9.6M/yr), Shopify Plus switches from the flat $2,300/mo plan to a 0.35% revenue share. A merchant doing $12M/yr would pay $42,000/yr — versus $27,600/yr on the flat plan. This threshold was previously $1M/mo. The lower threshold means more mid-market brands trigger revenue share pricing without expecting to.
Subscription commerce pricing has stabilized around two models.
Recharge ($99/mo + 1.49%+$0.19/order) and Chargebee ($0-$599/mo) represent the two dominant approaches: transaction-fee-plus-subscription (Recharge) versus volume-based tiers (Chargebee). Bold Subscriptions and Ordergroove charge similar structures. The major shift: most platforms dropped per-subscriber fees in favor of per-transaction fees, making costs more predictable for stores with large inactive subscriber lists.
Where Each Platform Actually Fits
First store / testing a product ($0-$50K/yr revenue): Gumroad or Lemon Squeezy for digital products — no monthly fee, instant setup, no inventory. Shopify Basic ($29/mo) or BigCommerce Standard ($29/mo) for physical goods. Avoid WooCommerce for non-technical founders — the hosting and plugin management overhead isn't worth saving $29/mo.
Growing DTC brand ($50K-$500K/yr revenue): Shopify Grow ($79/mo) or BigCommerce Plus ($79/mo). Enable Shopify Payments if available to eliminate the 2% non-native fee. Budget $600-$1,500/yr for apps. Recharge ($99/mo) if subscriptions are a meaningful part of the business.
Scaling DTC or mid-market brand ($500K-$5M/yr revenue): Shopify Advanced ($299/mo) or BigCommerce Pro ($299/mo). Evaluate Shopify Plus when monthly GMV approaches $800K — the flat $2,300/mo fee becomes cheaper than Advanced + app costs at scale.
Marketplace or multi-vendor platform: Sharetribe ($99-$499/mo) for marketplace MVPs with no developer. Medusa or custom build for high-volume marketplaces requiring full control. Arcadier for B2B procurement marketplaces.
Enterprise / headless: Shopify Plus ($2,300/mo+), BigCommerce Enterprise (custom), or a headless stack (Medusa, Commerce Layer, or Nacelle) with a separate frontend. Headless commerce requires an engineering team — budget $10,000-$50,000+ for initial build.
